A key parameter in producing food is to guarantee the safety and quality of it. Who didn’t open a packaging once and found strange ‘greens’ and ‘grays’ on the product while the product wasn’t out of date? Almost all of us have had this experience. Hygiene is still a major concern in food factories and because it is not easy to prevent this, our customer, a multinational in the FMCG area, asked us to design and build a system that copes with hygienic design in the factory to prevent recall.

The new system primarily focuses on the production process and has two main components. The first component is a database with all production lines for each factory. These production lines are specified in detail to the equipment used in the line. For each machine a specification is stored under which conditions it can be used on the line, and what the hygienic parameters are. So, when new products are developed it is possible to check in which factory these can be produced with the right hygienic parameters. Also the complete process does not need to be redefined by use of the master database with production line information. A side effect is that we’re able to automatically generate a process line flow diagram that gives a good overview of the design of the line.

The second component in the system is the risk assessment system. This system calculates possible risks in each step of the process that can occur while producing a new designed product on a certain production line. The risks that are taken into account are not only in the area of Hygiene, but also HACCP, Safety and Quality are taken into account. It also shows possible restrictions which could occur during the production process and how these risks can be overcome. With minimal effort a product designer now has all the information needed to produce their products. The increased transparency also results in a quicker time to market.

We have designed this system in close cooperation with our customer. The system helps product developers worldwide to incorporate hygienic design from the first stages of developing a new product on the drawing board. The scope of the system can be extended in the future to include more complex situations like rework and split streams in the production line by updating the knowledge base. This project was part of a larger project to review the equipment on production lines for hygiene and cleaning problems.

The line maintenance system is built using .Net MVC web technology and backed with an Oracle database. The assessment system is an extension to an existing Java/Tomcat application linked to the same database. This system can simulate the steps of a product through the factory using a standalone knowledge rule base. The system runs on standard hardware and can be used worldwide using the company’s Intranet.

COAS Software Systems — COAS builds custom software solutions for national and international clients. We have a broad range of skills to solve logistics, knowledge, information and integration problems and capable of giving after care for business critical systems. We have a good track record in the foods, pet foods, snack foods, home & personal care, rental and healthcare business and we have the people that are able to quickly grasp new knowledge domains.

March 2012, Stellendam, The Netherlands — COAS Software Systems, today announced it has achieved a Silver Application Development competency, demonstrating its ability to meet Microsoft Corp. customers’ evolving needs in today’s dynamic business environment. To earn a Microsoft silver competency, partners must successfully demonstrate expertise through rigorous exams, culminating in Microsoft certifications. And to ensure the highest quality of services, Microsoft requires customer references for successful implementation and customer satisfaction.

COAS Software Systems has been developing software for more than 25 years on the Microsoft platform using various technologies. We focus on knowledge intensive applications that are used on premise by multinationals and small and medium enterprises. This requires us to use the appropriate technology and be compatible with the software running in data centers of multinationals and hosting providers. With the Silver Application Development competency we are a recognized expert in Microsoft solutions and have access to a broad range of Microsoft software to test customer proof of concepts and for demonstration.

“This Microsoft Silver Application Development competency showcases our expertise in today’s technology market and demonstrates our knowledge of Microsoft and its products,” said Janco Tanis, Managing Director of COAS Software Systems.
“By achieving a silver competency, organizations have proven their expertise in specific technology areas, placing them among the top 5 percent of Microsoft partners worldwide,” said Jon Roskill, corporate vice president, Worldwide Partner Group at Microsoft Corp. “When customers look for an IT partner to meet their business challenges, choosing a company that has attained Microsoft competencies is a smart move. These are highly qualified professionals with access to Microsoft technical support and product teams.”

Earning the Application Development competency helps partners differentiate themselves as a trusted expert to their customers through development and deployment of commercial or custom applications built using core Microsoft technologies like Windows Server and Windows 8 operating systems, the Windows Azure platform, Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 development system, Microsoft BizTalk Server and emerging cloud-based and web business models. By gaining access to a comprehensive set of benefits through the Application Development competency, partners can acquire new customers and help them be more productive and profitable through deployment of business applications, advanced web portals or rich client user interfaces that run on premises or in the cloud.

The Microsoft Partner Network helps partners strengthen their capabilities to showcase leadership in the marketplace on the latest technology, to better serve customers and, with 640,000 Microsoft partners in their ecosystem, to easily connect with one of the most active, diverse networks in the world.

The year 2012 is COAS Software Systems’ 25th anniversary. In those 25 years we’ve seen a lot of technologies come by. When we started in 1987, networks and the internet we’re not as widely available as they are now and we designed single user systems under MS-DOS with local storage. That quickly changed when companies installed Local Area Networks. We then upgraded our software and home grown databases to multiuser usage.

In the early nineties when we got some big multinationals as customer this all changed. We moved from MS DOS to Windows 3 and to Client Server technology. Systems were designed for multiuser access by default and we changed to relational databases on the server using SQL. This opened the door to lots of new possibilities where data was stored in a single database and used by multiple different systems. It also started the integration of all kinds of software. In the past we developed software which was used on its own and now we could develop software where master data was coming from other databases or ERP systems saving a lot of time to the users avoiding double data entry.

The next technology shift was happening around 1998 when our Client Server systems moved to the web. Although we did not develop a lot of world wide web internet applications, a lot of systems developed by us moved to web based technology and were used on the customer’s Intranet. The advantage it gave was that we could reuse the relation databases from the original Client Server systems and no roll-out was needed because everything could be accessed by the browser. This was not without its issues as bandwidth was expensive wide area networks we’re still relatively slow and the systems did not always perform optimally on the other side of the world.

The last technology wave is happening at the moment where all kind of devices are connected. This is true for consumer devices but also for professional devices used in factories like PLC’s and scanners. In the past we had to write drivers to communicate over serial lines. Nowadays everything can be accessed using the TCP/IP protocol on the network which makes it easier to support from a distance.

In those 25 years a lot of things have become much simpler on the technology side. For us this means we can focus fully on the final software solution that brings the biggest benefit to our users. Most of the times our customers are not really interested in technology itself but only in the benefits these technologies bring to their business.

We like to thank all our employees and customers for the trust they have given to COAS Software Systems and we hope we can work together for many more year to come! New employees are also welcome and can check out our careers!

December 2011, Stellendam — Sieval Dedicated Solutions has selected COAS Software Systems as preferred outsourcing partner to web-enable and support the complete X-Totaal suite of applications.

The X-Totaal suite is the result of years of craftmanship in the home furnishing and project furnishing sector where practical knowledge has been translated into the very complete drawing- and calculation program suite WoonTotaal Pro, ProjectTotaal. This product suite is completed with AtelierTotaal at the backoffice. This system processes the electronically generated workorders so these can be fabricated in the atelier.

These systems calculate floor- and window decoration, inclusive of breadth plan, curtain confection, etc. However also the use of appliances such as rails, glue, equalizer etc. are taken into account and the amount of work. The system optimises the use of materials by means different algorithms depending on the material patterns and surface dimensions.

Sieval Dedicated Solutions is an invention machine that has its origin in the home furnishing sector itself. They have developed calculation systems that are no ‘reconstructed’ standard solution, but that automatise the parts that the sector needs most. Top automisers (with a background in the line of business) converted the calculation methods of the practice into digital tools that are unique in their way: WoonTotaal, ProjectTotaal and AtelierTotaal.

This week we’ve got the order to implement a Pallet Labeling software solution for finished and semi-finished goods in two factories in South Africa. The scope for this project has been set after a site visit in June and the goal is to replace a number of the the existing software systems and to have a better alignment with the current business needs, factory hardware and ERP systems.

The delivery is scheduled end 2011 to early 2012.

COAS Software Systems develops, maintains and supports dedicated software solutions for the fast moving consumer goods industry. Since its inception COAS has focused on long lasting end user value through generic data modeling and configurable systems to support changing organisations. Only through a deep understanding of the business logic and required flexibility, systems can be designed for future change with no or a very limited impact on the technicalities.

That’s my strong personal view, and it was confirmed by consistent feedback in the review!”

Implemented a system to plan logistics, production and transport in two UK sites producing premium brands in Snackfood and Petfood. The system is fully integrated with the factory dispatch, forklifts and ERP systems.

Rollout of a project management tool to cover safety and quality for product developers. The webbased system covers product development and optimisation modules for various area’s including Ecotoxicology, Microbiology, Sustainability, Toxicology,… The regional rollout covers R&D laboratories in Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Rollout of inter-company invoicing system to 35 sites worldwide. This is a Client/Server solution and deployed on local desktops.
